“In 1982, he left NASA, sold all of his belongings, and moved to Italy to study classic Renaissance art”
Ofcourse! It is completely normal to leave a steady and prestigious carear for the sake of art. Well this man… a man named Kurt Wenner decided to do just that.
Wenner invented an art form, now known as anamorphic or 3D pavement art. Look at the pictures below, and you’ll easily notice Wenner is like the great European masters of art that we read about in school. These images give the illusion of soaring architecture and floating figures in ceiling or sidewalk canvases alike. This genius understanding of perspective and this advanced skill of geometry to create compositions that appear to rise from, or fall into the ground have crowds all around the world gathering.
What’s more fascinating are the videos showing the process. He starts with a string and some chalk and uses this as a compass to create perfect circles and archs. This foundation is what most passerbys don’t understand. It’s when the painting develops that, he gets the stares.
He is indeed a street painter, but the best of it’s kind. One who isn’t selfish, who simply does art for the passion of it. Every painting is free to anyone who chooses to stop and admire. It’s temporary art, but with a lasting impression. All it’ll take is a strong rainfall to make it fade. Maybe that is part of why it’s so beautiful. To know that at any moment it can start to go away, kind of makes it feel vulnerable and even more special.
